Artist's Statement

My work is about deserts, oceans, pools and family connections. I love the desert, its vastness, the wide open spaces and the colors. I have lived near the desert for 25 years and find inspiration in its beauty year after year.

I am fascinated by the ever changing colors and moods of the ocean. They are as powerful and subtle as the familial relationships I associate with the sea. Once a year family vacations to Florida continue into middle age, refocusing our history and memories of our happiest occasions.

In my Swimmer series I am enjoying the pleasure I find in the swimming pool. Since I was a little girl, I lived on and under the water in the pool on family vacations. I love the silence, the solitude and the weightlessness. The prints explore the inner space of being in a pool - the feelings and memories and thoughts swimming in my head.

I love the immediacy of monoprinting and the complexity of reductive relief printing. Lifting the paper off of the plate reveals more than just an image but a connection to my history.
